Me and my partner (Australian) have travelled all around Africa and to date Amapondo lodge is up there as the best! We felt very safe, great food, accommodation and sea views. They also have a great backpacker with many large rooms with proper beds. Amapondo is one of the best lodges I have seen in Africa… it’s very clean, and the staff are all so nice. I met the owners as well who were just fantastic people. Depending on your budget, this place has higher end to backpacker accommodation. There area offers a lot of natural beauty and activities like exploring the airstrip (amazing views), beach, swimming, fishing charters, surfing, kayaking which is probably more than most other places I’ve visited. Daniel Stewart16 February 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Cool place run by amazing people. We were camping with a beautiful view, a stones throw away from the beach. They were so helpful with everything. We went on hikes they suggested, and they also took us on an adventure to the Kraal and into the mangroves that our car would never have reached. Thank you so much for our stay, and the amazing company. Would 100% recommend 👌 TYDETORODE9 February 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Great hospitality, great food at the restaurant and awesome hosts. They took us around Port St John’s to the local airstrip, a neighboring backpackers and to awesome viewpoints in between. I couldn’t recommend this establishment more. They’ll definitely be seeing us again soon!

Several bus operators go to Umtata every day from both the eastern and western direction:

Directions from East London:
Directions from Durban:
You can fly to Mthatha from Johannesburg, and from there on carry on with either a taxi or a shuttle to Port St. Johns.
Fly to East London, rent a car and drive the (N2) scenic Great Kei River Pass towards Mathatha and then take the R61 to Port St Johns.
You can also try a more alternative way by charting a flight directly to Port St. Johns from East London. If you choose to do it this way you will be greeted by a stunning sight when you land at the so-called Gates of Port St. Johns, a couple of twin mountains, Thesiger and Sullivan, which lie on either side of the mouth of the Umzimvubu River.
